Hammond Early Learning Center
High-quality early learning experiences in the Preschool/Pre-K years set the foundation for future school success. All SCH Preschool/Pre-K programming is housed at the SCH Early Learning Center (ELC) at Morton Elementary School. The programs included at the ELC are Head Start, PACT, Special Education Preschool and Preschool Diagnostics.
School City of Hammond (SCH) Head Start is a free preschool/kindergarten readiness program that serves children ages 3 to 5 (must be 3 by August 1). The program helps children get ready for kindergarten through developmentally appropriate educational experiences that address learning in the areas of literacy, math, language, cognition, social studies, science, and technology, while also focusing on social-emotional and physical development. The program also addresses children’s health, dental, mental wellness, and nutritional needs. Parents are an important part of the Head Start program and are encouraged to be an active part of their child’s Head Start experience through setting personal and/or family goals, and being involved in a variety of classroom, at-home, and program activities. The program meets the federal regulations outlined in the Head Start Performance Standards, State regulations from the Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning, and the Indiana Early Learning Standards. Head Start is made possible by a grant from the Geminus Corporation through the Department of Health and Human Services.
PACT (Parents And Children Together) is a no-cost Pre-K Program designed for Hammond residents whose children are four years old by August 1st. This program focuses on building strong foundations in literacy, math, and reasoning, in accordance with Title I preschool regulations. The curriculum supports the school readiness goals and aligns with the Indiana Early Learning Standards, emphasizing the holistic development of each child. PACT teaching staff provide focused instruction on social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth to ensure children are well-prepared for their educational journey. Recognizing the vital role of parents in early childhood education, PACT offers comprehensive support, home activity folders, parent classroom volunteer opportunities, and interactive parent workshops. These initiatives strengthen the partnership between home and school, creating a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
The SCH Special Education Preschool program provides specialized instruction for eligible 3- to 5-year olds with identified disabilities. A component of the program is parent education and training to assist families in working with developmental challenges that become evident before their child’s entry into elementary school.
Preschool Diagnostics provides evaluations/assessments for preschool children 2 to 5 years of age who have suspected developmental delays or other potential disabilities. These diagnostic services are provided at no cost to families.
Applications are accepted throughout the year for these programs.
