Dr. Walter J. Watkins

As chief executive officer of the school corporation, Dr. Watkins is charged with carrying out the policies and programs of the Board of School Trustees.

Dr. Watkins has earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette. He holds a Master of Science degree in secondary education from Indiana-Purdue University in Indianapolis and a Bachelor of Science degree in English and secondary education from Indiana University, Bloomington.

He has served the School City of Hammond in various capacities for more than 26 years – as teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director of secondary curriculum and instruction.

Other academic and educational credentials include a K-12 reading teacher endorsement and a certificate in administration and supervision. He has had extensive training in school improvement and has served as a fellow for the Center for Leadership and School Reform in Louisville, Kentucky. Through the Indiana Alliance for National Board Certification, he was trained as a mentor for classroom teachers wishing to pursue National Board Certification status.

Dr. Watkins is a member of the board of directors of the Hammond Education Foundation and of Values – a program working with at-risk African-American males. He is a member and past president of the Hammond Woodmar Kiwanis and a member of the Family Selection Committee for the Northwest Indiana Habitat for Humanity. He also holds both state and national life PTA memberships.
